The Angel’s Envy Cask Strength 2015 Limited Edition

200 ml Christmas market parka flask

Angels-Envy-Cask-Strength-2015-Limited-EditionTasting notes:
This whiskey reminds me of a wonderful end of December spent wandering the Christmas markets in Berlin. The nose is just like that time, but only if I had traveled there by floating in a slightly smoldering birch bark canoe through a vast forest of blossoming cherry trees. And if I’d worn a finely tailored sport coat from waxed potato sacks, with lacquered mushroom buttons and beaver pelt lining the pockets and lapels. But other than those two additions, it was just like that time in Berlin.

My wife (at that point she was a green-card seeking paramour) and I strolled through the Alexanderplatz Christmas market, surrounded by the thousands of wooden cabin-like huts, our mouths full of rich caramels–astounding caramels–and confections made to look and taste a little like aspen bark. With this dram, I can almost taste once more the roasted root vegetables with exotic tapir tallow gravy I had there. That dish truly was the best (by contrast, that raw pork sausage was Teewurst).

On the finish, I’m reminded of the Gendarmenmarkt, where I had that crazy paté lozenge that melted into my mouth in a way that blurred the subject/object distinction and spread through me like an hallucination. I’m also reminded of the Glühwein chaser that accompanied it. What tremendous, joyful memories–and what a whiskey to bring it all back to me so vividly! Prost zu Hendersonensippe! Cheers to the Henderson clan! Merry Christmas to you all!

Rating:

On the scale of stars in great Christmas films,
The Angel’s Envy Cask Strength 2015 is Natalie Wood–In Miracle on 34th Street, then 9 year-old Natalie got her first starring role (though it was her sixth film role). Released in the UK under the title, The Big Heart, that Christmas classic has it all, including a scene in which the real Kris Kringle keeps a drunk (fake) Santa from joining the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.
