The Whisky Extravaganza 2016 Schedule (and a Discount Code!)

We do not miss the Scotch Malt Whisky Society’s Whisky Extravaganza when it comes into Boston. In part, that’s because the Boston Whisky Extravaganza was our very first whisky event. It’s also because it’s one of our favorite whisky events, and the people who run the SMWS (both in the UK and in the US, but especially in the US) are among the best whisky folks we know. But like I said, we don’t miss the Boston Extravaganza, and of course we’ll be there this year as well. We’ll be the ones with the Groucho Marx glasses having an inordinate amount of fun.

The food at the Whisky Extravaganza is as good as or better than that offered at other whisky events. It may seem odd to lead off with that claim, but I’m going through the highlights in order. That order is the order in which we enjoy an Extravaganza: we eat first so as to put down a good base layer. Hey, we may be Impostors, but we’ve learned this much. Then comes the exceptional single malt, Scotch, and unique whiskies from around the world. Since there are no drink tickets or anything of that sort, the only limit on the number of whiskies you can taste is the limit of common sense and discretion. We recommend that you avoid whiskies you’ve tried before, focusing on the new ones (to you). If you’re new to this game, then you’ll have to add other rules in order to enjoy the event judiciously and with proper decorum. The representatives on hand from each participating distillery or brand add appreciably to the enjoyment, mainly by educating, but often by just charming or entertaining. Cigars come at the beginning, but since they’re for later (as in after the event), I mention them last. They’re a nice bonus, but the souvenir snifter glass is the kicker, because since it’s not a consumable, it will provide you joy and pleasure for years to come.
